Foster carers, Jill and Megan look back on their incredible 9-year journey of fostering with Foster Wales Flintshire.
when did you start fosteing, and what motivated you to become foster carers?
In 2016, Jill made the life-changing decision to become a foster carer. Her motivation stemmed from her experiences working in a primary school, where she encountered many children looked after, facing challenging circumstances. Jill came across an advertisement for Foster Wales Flintshire and instantly felt it was the right time to take action.
What added an extra layer of meaning to this journey was the fact that her daughter, Megan, chose to step into this role alongside her. Together, they embraced the incredible opportunity to positively impact the lives of looked after children looked after, all while deepening their own bond.
how many years have you been fostering, and how many children would you say you have fostered during that time?
Jill and Megan have dedicated 9 rewarding years to fostering, during which they have provided short break short term / respite / emergency care for an incredible 15 children. They been instrumental in supporting other local foster families by providing regular monthly respite foster care.
what have you enjoyed most about being foster carers?
One of the most fulfilling aspects for Jill has been becoming a significant presence in the lives of these children. She treasures the chance to offer them a new perspective, reminding them that the world is big and filled with opportunities waiting just around the corner. Both Jill and Megan have put forth incredible effort to help each child in their care reach their full potential.
what will you miss the most about being foster carers?
As Jill and Megan reflect on their experience, they express how much they will miss the children, which have become an integral part of their routine. The familiar rhythm of daily life will be challenging to leave behind. They fondly recall the joy of the vibrant energy that fills their home when different children come to stay.
Some of their most cherished memories include gathering around the dinner table with the children, playing games together, and enjoying fun moments during skiing and fishing trips. Megan fondly recalls long car journeys filled with laughter as they played various games, often with the children coming up with their own creative games along the way.
what advice would you give to someone who was at the start of the fostering process now?
The path of fostering can be long and filled with challenges, but the positives far outweigh the negatives. The rewards are immense, and this journey has greatly enhanced their well-being. Jill emphasises that knowing she has made an impact, however small, brings her joy. She recognises that while they have taught the children valuable lessons, those children have also imparted wisdom and joy to both her and Megan, ultimately bringing them all closer as a family.
Jill and Megan wholeheartedly recommend fostering through their local authority, Foster Wales Flintshire. They believe the support they’ve received from their social worker, Catrin, has been unparalleled. They feel strongly that it's crucial for children to remain close to their local area, as a sense of community is vital for their sense of belonging.
Fostering has been a journey of love, learning, and lasting memories for Jill and Megan, and they hope to inspire others to take this rewarding step.
